This is the fifth lesson in a series adapted from Dana Morey’s discipleship guide Your New Life.

We have been comparing the Christian life to a seed growing into a healthy plant. We are the seed. The church is the soil. The Word of God is the water. And prayer is like soaking in the warm sunshine of God’s presence.

Prayer is simple. It is talking with God. It includes both speaking to Him and listening to Him. The amazing truth is this: the Creator of the universe, the one true and living God, wants to talk with you. He cares about you and wants you to share every part of your life with Him. Through prayer we can bring our fears and worries to God. It is how we can share our needs, our desires, and our dreams. Prayer is our direct connection to God.

Because prayer is so important, the Bible tells us to pray continually. The Bible says:

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.

Philippians 4:6 (NLT)

You can pray anytime and anywhere, out loud or silently. You can pray while sitting, walking, working, or resting. There is no place where God does not want to meet with you.

Your prayers do not need to be formal or perfect. They simply need to be real and from your heart.

Prayer Has Power

Prayer is powerful because you are speaking with God. And prayer changes things. The Bible says, “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results” (James 5:16, NLT). Jesus also said, “I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours” (Mark 11:24, NLT).

This teaches us a beautiful truth: when we pray, we can have full confidence that God hears us and delights in answering. We can pray with great expectation, knowing that God’s will for us is always good, pleasing, and perfect. As we grow in our relationship with Him, we learn to pray for things that align with His heart and His wonderful plans for our lives. The Bible promises, “And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for” (1 John 5:14-15, NLT). Remember, God loves you and wants to hear every detail of your life. While you can talk to Him anywhere and anytime, setting aside a special quiet time each day helps you focus on His presence and hear His voice more clearly.

Here is one simple way to begin. These are not rules, just helpful suggestions as you learn to talk with God.

Praise, Thank, Ask, Listen

Praise

Praise God for who He is and what He has done for you. Look into the sky and consider such a great God who could create the sun, the moon, and the stars. Look around at nature and praise God for the way He gave us everything we need in this world. Think about the cross that Jesus gave His life on and praise God for saving you from your sin. Let your heart consider how awesome our God is, and praise Him for it.

Thank

Let thankfulness to God flow from your heart. Take time to thank Him for the good things in your life, simple things like clothes on your back or food on your table. Thank Him for the breath in your lungs and a sound mind.

As you do, you will find yourself naturally overflowing with His deep joy and perfect peace. “Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18, NLT).

Ask

Bring God all of your requests. Ask Him for those things you need and want. Pray for your family and friends. Ask God for wisdom and strength. Ask Him for direction in your life. Ask God for whatever is in your heart. Remember, He loves you and delights to give you good things. The Bible says, “You haven’t done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy” (John 16:24, NLT). God loves to give good things to His children.

Listen

Take time to be quiet before God. The Holy Spirit will guide you. He may speak through the Bible or through thoughts in your heart. Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27, NLT). Learning to hear God can take time, but as you practice, you will learn. As you are learning to hear God, always remember: God will never say anything that goes against the Bible.

The blessings of prayer are too great to fully describe. As you continue to pray, you will discover them for yourself.

In the final lesson, discover how to share this new life with others, starting with your own story of what Jesus has done for you.
