In the summer of 1984, I was driving through the desert on my way home to Illinois. A team of us had just finished a cross country run from Plymouth Rock, MA, to Los Angeles, CA, to promote the Year of the Bible during the 1984 Olympics. Late one night, alone in an old pick-up truck, I began to sense in my heart the voice of God speaking to me. I was to begin a ministry to tell the world about the wonderful love of Jesus. Thrilled and excited I immediately asked Him, “What should I call it?” Again in my heart I heard Him direct me to one of my dearest scripture passages: Isaiah 42:5-7. I knew the name would be found there. I pulled over to the side of the highway and quickly turned to Isaiah in my Bible to discover what was awaiting me in that passage. I began to read:
Thus says the God the LORD,
Who crated the heavens and stretched them out.
Who spread out the earth and its offspring.
Who gives breath to the people on it
And spirit to those who walk in it,
“I am the LORD, I have called You in righteousness,
I will also hold You by the hand and watch over You,
And will appoint You as a covenant to the people,
As a light to the nations,
To open blind eyes,
To bring out prisoners from the dungeon
And those who dwell in darkness from the prison.
The moment I read the phrase “a light to the nations” I knew that was not only the name but what we were to be. The ministry of A Light to the Nations has always been focused on using the resources that business produces to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, minister to the needy, hurting and poor, and find ways to encourage and inspire believers to become and accomplish everything that God designed them for. We are here to win souls – this is who we are.
